Audi might be preparing to make its famous quattro all-wheel-drive system considerably smarter. The technology that has been developed for its latest flagship, the Nuvolari, could eventually find its way into more mainstream models.
Audi CTO and R&D chief Rouven Mohr says future quattro systems will use intelligent, self-learning torque distribution. Instead of relying mainly on fixed hardware, the system will use software to decide how torque should be distributed between the wheels.

“You will find a different interpretation in the standard cars of the intelligent drivetrain, meaning that the torque distribution in the car is done on a very intelligent and self-learning base.”
Audi sees two possible directions for the technology. One version could focus on improving traction and making the car more fun to drive, while another could prioritise efficiency and use all-wheel drive only when it is actually needed.

“One interpretation is to maximize traction and driving fun,” Mohr said. “But you can use this technology also to have the most efficient four-wheel drive system based on self-learning.”
According to Mohr, this represents a shift in how Audi approaches quattro. The hardware remains important, but software and the intelligence controlling it are becoming equally significant.

“In the past, it was always hardware, which kind of central differential you are using. And then you have a different four-wheel drive system today. It’s a mixture between which kind of hardware you’re using and also which kind of functionality, which kind of software intelligence you have to use for the actuation.”
