The Green Bay Packers are hoping that their 2024 draft class solidified multiple areas of weakness, specifically, along the offensive line and defense. Over 80% of their draft picks (9 out of 11) focused on those two areas.
Going into next season the Packers will likely have a high number of draft picks at their disposal again.
The Green Bay Packers Get Big Update For The 2025 NFL Draft
According to Freddie Boston of FanSided:
The Packers rarely spend big money in free agency, often resulting in receiving multiple compensatory draft picks—they had three in 2024.
Even after signing Josh Jacobs and Xavier McKinney in this year’s free agency, the Packers are expected to receive a compensatory selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. Over The Cap is usually on the money with its projections, and it has Green Bay receiving an additional seventh-round pick in 2025.
Compensatory picks are determined by a team’s work in the previous offseason’s free agency. If you lose more players than you bring in, you will likely receive bonus picks. Big spenders often receive no compensatory selections. Over The Cap uses a “cancellation chart” to track the incomings, outgoings, and the contracts they sign.
Here are the key takeaways for the Packers:
That would take the Packers’ total number of picks to eight—one in each of the opening six rounds and two in the seventh.
The Packers are expected to compete in the NFC North and likely won’t be sellers before the trade deadline, taking away the possibility of landing another premium pick like the third-rounder they received in the Rasul Douglas deal last year.
The Packers’ 2024 Draft Class Figures To Play A Big Role In The Future Of This Team
With their first pick, the Packers selected Arizona’s Jordan Morgan to address the offensive line. The versatile Morgan played multiple positions in college and could be Green Bay’s left tackle in the future. He can also move inside to guard should the need arise.
It was a good day 2 for the Packers as they bolstered their defense. Edgerrin Cooper was selected after they traded back from No. 41 to No. 45. His presence could fill the void left by the departure of De’Vondre Campbell this offseason. Javon Bullard was selected with the 58th pick by Green Bay, hoping they can pair him with free-agent signing Xavier McKinney. MarShawn Lloyd of USC and Ty’Ron Hopper of Missouri rounded out day 2.
With pick No. 111, the Packers moved up in the fourth round with the Jets. Taking Oregon’s Evan Williams, the Ducks’ leading tackler, they gave new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley another safety to work with. Jacob Monk, a versatile offensive line center from Duke, was also selected in the fifth round by the team. In Oregon State safety Kitan Oladapo, they added depth to the secondary and added a special teams prospect.
If this draft class creates a formidable offensive line and defense for years to come, it couId set up Green Bay to be a real contender for as long as Jordan Love is under center.
