Freelander 8 coming to Australia in 2027; 800 hp + serious off-road hardware

Freelander is preparing to enter the Australian market with a seriously large SUV. The Chery and Jaguar Land Rover joint-venture brand will launch its Freelander 8 in Australia sometime in 2027, although the exact timing, pricing and local specifications are yet to be announced.

The Freelander 8 measures 5,185mm long and rides on a 3,040mm wheelbase, putting it firmly into large luxury SUV territory. The company says it will compete with established premium European and Japanese rivals.

In China, the SUV uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive extended-range electric powertrain producing 610 kW (818 hp) and 813 Nm (600 lb ft) of torque. Despite weighing nearly 3 tons, it can reportedly sprint from 0–100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds.

A 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine sits under the bonnet, but it does not drive the wheels. Its 105 kW (140 hp) and 220 Nm (162 lb ft) output is used to recharge the battery when required.

The Freelander 8 also has serious off-road hardware, including 4L and 4H modes, a front differential lock, adjustable suspension height, and a claimed 900mm wading depth.
