The BMW Skytop concept was unveiled recently at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como in Italy. It’s a stylish 2-seater coupe based on the 8 Series featuring a targa top.
While the Skytop is only a concept, at the moment, sources tell us that BMW is contemplating putting it into production. If there is sufficient interest among the collector community, BMW might produce a limited number of cars.
Speaking of production numbers, rumors suggest that BMW might build around 50 examples of the Skytop for about $500,000 apiece.
BMW hasn’t shared any technical details of the Skytop concept, except for the fact, it is based on the 8 Series. We can expect the production version to use the same underpinnings as the M8 Competition, including its twin-turbo V8 paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and the brand’s xDrive all-wheel drive system.
According to Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design, “It offers a combination of driving dynamics and elegance at the highest level, comparable to its historic ancestors, like the BMW Z8 or BMW 503.”
