- We are 12 rounds into the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship
- Max Verstappen leads the 2024 F1 Drivers’ Championship standings
- Red Bull Racing leads the 2024 F1 Constructors’ Championship standings
The 12th round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship got underway on Sunday with the British Grand Prix, held at Silverstone.
Mercedes-Benz AMG’s Lewis Hamilton took the win, his first victory in over two years. The victory is also the second for Mercedes this season.
However, Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, the reigning champion, came charging back to take P2 in the final few laps of the race.
Norris put up a great fight at Silverstone, like he has in previous rounds, but tire decisions and strategy sealed his fate. The McLaren driver was primed to finish second behind Hamilton, like he did in the two previous races, the Spanish and Canadian Grands Prix. He also made his maiden victory this season, by taking top honors at the Miami Grand Prix, and given his improving pace there may be more victories for him before the year is out.
Norris’ strong performance also means McLaren has well and truly overtaken Ferrari as the team putting up the best fight against leader Red Bull. Mercedes has also shown some pace in recent rounds, though like Ferrari it remains a step behind Red Bull and McLaren.
Verstappen is still the favorite to take home the title this season, which will be his fourth, though his performance gap with Norris isn’t as big as it used to be, as witnessed in the last three races.
Fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez continues to deliver a mixed performance and as a result remains well off the pace of his teammate.
Mercedes, like Perez, has struggled throughout much of the season, though recent upgrades look to be turning the tide. Nevertheless, any change is too late to retain star driver Lewis Hamilton, who switches to Ferrari next year.
There’s still plenty of time for teams to make changes and for drivers to further catch up with current leader Verstappen, as there are still 13 races to go in this season.
