USA Survives South Sudan Scare, Win 101-100 In Pre-Olympic


USA narrowly beat South Sudan with a 1-point margin to escape an upset on Saturday, July 20, during the pre-Olympics game played at the O2 Arena in London.

The keenly contested clash began with USA showcasing their dominance, leading 12-2 during the first quarter, but South Sudan rallied to win with a 2-point margin, 26-24.

The second quarter, as reported by BasketNews, witnessed South Sudan overpowering USA, leading by 15 points early in the second quarter, 43-28.

South Sudan also led by double digits in the third quarter, but Team USA went on a huge run to eliminate the deficit.

With 20 seconds remaining, South Sudan was in the lead, but LeBron James’ layup saved the USA for a 101-100 (24-26, 20-32, 37-18, 20-24) win.

LeBron James was the standout player for Team USA, inspiring the third-quarter 16-0 run and scoring the winning basket. Overall, James finished the game with 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists for a 28 EFF.

Meanwhile, Anthony Davis captured a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds but made just 4 shots in 12 attempts. Joel Embiid had 14 points and 7 rebounds on 5-for-6 shooting.

Carlik Jones was the most impressive player for South Sudan, collecting a triple-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists. Marial Shayok led both teams in scoring with 25 points on 9-for-16 shooting and 6-for-12 from beyond the arc.

Team USA will play against World Champions Germany on Monday, July 22.
