The song, “Summer Night City”, was originally recorded by ABBA in 1978
As usual, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA wrote and produced the song “Summer Night City” for the group. It was originally recorded for their album “Voulez Vous” but was dropped and would later turn up on the “Greatest Hits Vol.2” album in 1978 and released as a single in early September that year. The song charted at No.1 in Sweden, No.5 in the UK and was a top twenty hit across most of the rest of the world. I was not, however, released in America.
There have been, surprisingly, a number of cover versions of the song since With Swedish band Theiron delivering a rock version in 2001 and Britain’s Bananarama performing the song for their 2019 tour. But in 2023, Steps’ Claire Richards recorded and released a new version with Erasure‘s Andy Bell for her album “Euphoria”. The track was released as the second single in August that year.
But which version is the best? ABBA’s original or CLAIRE and ANDY’s cover?
