For her second mini album, ex-GFriend member Yerin has gone down a trendy synthpop route. Despite being leveraged by every idol act imaginable, this sound still holds appeal to me. Its nostalgic vibe works especially well for soloists, letting classic melodies and chugging beats take center stage.
Unfortunately, Bambambam (밤밤밤) feels like an amateur version of this trend. Yerin’s thin voice isn’t enough to drive the song forward, and the producers don’t opt for much layering to help her out. The instrumental is equally muted, hitting familiar sounds but failing to do anything new with them. The production feels flat in many places, even as the track is meant to reach its climax. It’s a pleasant enough listen, but there are far better K-pop songs in this style.
