Secret Number have averaged two comebacks a year, displaying a sonic versatility that makes their music hard to pin down. Not all of these songs have been equally successful, but I’m always curious to see what they’ll do next. New single Starlight gives them a spacey, synthy makeover.
When this video first started, I thought we were in for some cool, WJSN-esque celestial pop. However, Starlight quickly reveals itself as something else. Its chorus plays with a few nice sounds and textures, but I hate the verses. They have this cloying “oompah, oompah” rhythm (and I don’t mean the Red Velvet song!), married to trap beats and a sing-song series of melodies. They feel like they’re pulled from a different track entirely and effectively neuter the effect of the chorus. Beyond these missteps, there just isn’t enough in Starlight to keep me engaged.
