Hur Youngji has had an unusual career path, joining girl group Kara in 2014 via reality TV series and releasing a few albums with them during the group’s twilight years. Then, she participated in their big reunion album late last year. In between, she’s acted, performed with agency-mates KARD and flirted with a solo career. Now — almost ten years after her debut — she’s released her first official solo album.
L.O.V.E feels like a suitable track to frame this moment. Its sound is at once trendy and classic — an easy, breeze disco-adjacent song with brass flourishes and a light pop beat. It suits Youngji’s voice well, allowing her to showcase personality and move effortlessly between vocals and rap. We’ve heard a few of these frothy, late-summer dance tracks recently and I don’t think L.O.V.E is any better or worse than most of them. However, I enjoy its splashy production and have a feeling its charms will grow more addictive with time.
