Offensive Pro-Bowler Continues To Be Linked To Team

The Green Bay Packers are going into the 2024 season with Super Bowl expectations.  While they may not be the favorite to win (yet) they are certainly one of the teams to watch.  That in-of-itself is extremely impressive given that they trade away one of the best quarterbacks of all time just over one full calendar year ago.

While the Packers have already made significant moves this off-season in free agency, could another one be on the way?

The Green Bay Packers Continue To Be Linked To Pro-Bowler On The Offensive Side Of The Ball

According to Colin Keane of The Sporting News:

Are the Green Bay Packers satisfied with their backup quarterbacks?

With rookie Michael Pratt poised to challenge second-year man Sean Clifford for the QB No. 2 job in a battle of the inexperienced, no one could take umbrage with the Packers for turning to free agency for a better backup option.

Green Bay has constructed a dynamic roster to be reckoned with around Jordan Love, and there’s no reason the Packers shouldn’t expect to compete in games even in the unfortunate event of a Love injury; that is, if their backup is solid enough to run an offense (no heroics required).

One of either Pratt or Clifford may very well develop into a respectable NFL quarterback in due time, but Green Bay is ready to win right now. As such, it would be irresponsible for the Packers not to protect against a Love injury with someone possessing years of experience in the league.

For this reason, Green Bay’s general manager Brian Gutekunst must be closely monitoring the free agency of Ryan Tannehill, who is still available.

Tannehill, 35, is coming off a season in which he started eight games for the Tennessee Titans, the remaining games he missed due to injury or as a result of his competition with Will Levis for the starting role.

At his best, Tannehill can be one of the most effective quarterbacks in the game. Tannehill was the NFL’s passer rating leader merely four seasons ago during a season for which he was also named a Pro Bowler and NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

On Wednesday, he was named the “most obvious choice at this point” for the Packers’ backup role by Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine.

Is Tannehill waiting patiently in free agency for a starting opportunity to surface? Perhaps he is. At the same time, joining a sleeper contender in Green Bay as the  No. 2 quarterback would be an enticing opportunity.

If the Packers can convince Tannehill to sign, they’d be purchasing some enormously valuable insurance for what promises to be a serious run at the NFC North crown.

It will be very interesting to see what the Packers do at the backup quarterback position.  For years with Aaron Rodgers, the backup quarterback position was rarely prioritized.

Now, in back-to-back years the Packers have drafted a quarterback in late rounds of the NFL Draft. They’re also being heavily linked to bringing in a veteran to back up Jordan Love.

Times are certainly changing in Green Bay.
