Toyota has been working on a new sports car based on the GR GT3 Concept that was showcased at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon. According to a Japanese publication, the upcoming coupe will be called ‘GR-GT.’
The Toyota GR-GT is said to be the brand’s first super sports car since the legendary Lexus LFA. The carmaker had initially planned to reveal it during the 2024 Nurburgring 24 Hours race and at the Super Taikyu races in Japan. However, the project was delayed, and the car is now expected to debut sometime later this year.
Touted as the LFA successor, the new model was expected to be released under the Lexus brand. There was even a proposal for a lightning-type headlight setup, but Toyota decided to go with the GR branding instead.
As per the report, the GR-GT is based on an aluminium spaceframe chassis and features lightweight body panels made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). It will be powered by a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine.
