The BMW M5 has put on a lot of weight since the E28 first came out. The latest generation of the flagship sedan weighs over 2.4 tonnes and has received a lot of flak for this reason. However, power has also gone up considerably, more than what it says on the tin in fact.
BMW claims the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and electric motor combination develops 717 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. However, a recent dyno test shows that the official figures could be a tad conservative.
IND Distribution took their G90 BMW M5 to the dyno at Performance Eurowerks to see just how much power it actually had under the hood. After three runs, it was clear that the new M5’s V8 hybrid powertrain made 696 hp and 729 lb-ft of torque at the wheels.
If you adjust this figure for drivetrain losses, which are usually considered to be around 15%, the overall output of the V8 hybrid at the crank turns out to be 820 hp and 859 lb-ft.
That’s quite impressive. It also explains why reviewers claim that the new M5 masks its weight well.
