Despite what the video shows, Dave Portnoy claims he didn’t actually say what you saw him say.
In his best impression of the late Rick James, Portnoy alleged he is the victim of “the magic of editing” to make it seem as if he said in Netflix’s “Sign Stealer” documentary that alleged Michigan sign-stealing mastermind Connor Stalions told him he was improperly in the Central Michigan sideline to sign steals.
Portnoy responded to a quote tweet of a clip of him stating Stalions is guilty by claiming he had somehow not actually said what he said: “Except i never said that.”
As a Michigan superfan, Portnoy is featured in the new documentary centered on Stalions and his alleged role in the sign-stealing scheme that engulfed Michigan in controversy last year.
One of the allegations is that Stalions wore Central Michigan gear on their sidelines to get a glimpse of Big Ten rival Michigan State on Sept. 1, 2023.
Stalions is alleged to be the goateed figure wearing a hat and glasses on the sidelines in photos that have since become viral.
The documentary shows Stalions holding a photo next to his face and shaking his head before cutting to Portnoy.
“Well, I know the answer to that because he told me,” Portnoy says in the clip. “Yeah, that was Connor on the sidelines. That was Connor on the sidelines.”
That would seem to be pretty overwhelming evidence that Portnoy did in fact say that and it would be hard to argue what Portnoy’s comment referred to.
His first tweet on the matter about editing came after a tweet from one of Barstool’s accounts stating: “Connor Stalions: I don’t recall attending a specific game Dave Portnoy: Yeah that was Connor on the sidelines… he told me.”
Portnoy later double down on his innocence following a tweet from an Ohio State fan stating: “@stoolpresidente said “Yes that was Connor Stallions [sic], he told me he was on the CMU sideline” what are we even doing? #MichiganCheated.”
The documentary features Stalions being probed about potentially attending said game and he says: “I don’t recall attending a specific game.”
Stalions also says of the photo allegedly of him on the sideline: “I don’t even think this guy looks like me.”
