UK-based Ariel Motor Company has revealed the second generation of its Nomad all-terrain sports car. Aptly named ‘Nomad 2’, the new model is powered by an engine from the Ford Focus ST.
The Ariel Nomad 2 is an ultra-lightweight, go-anywhere machine. In typical Ariel fashion, it features an exposed tube chassis, which is now said to be 60% stiffer than the previous iteration. The suspension setup has also been completely revised.
Ariel claims that the Nomad 2 has been redesigned from the ground up with only 3 carry-over parts from the previous generation. It has all-new bodywork with improved aero, new seating and instrumentation. The steering and brakes are also said to have been improved as well. The new model features options of fully selectable driver aids, including a three-stage
engine map controller, driver-adjustable launch and traction control, and an adjustable ABS developed to work on- and off-road.
At the heart of the Ariel Nomad 2 is a 2.3-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine from the Focus ST. In the Atom, it has been tuned to 301 hp and 382 lb-ft of torque. Drivers can select from two more engine modes that restrict the output to 256 hp and 298 hp.
The Nomad 2 comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox paired with a limited-slip differential. Customers can also opt for the Quaife sequential gearbox. 0-60 mph comes up in 3.4 seconds, while top speed is restricted to 134 mph.
The Nomad 2 gets double wishbone suspension with K-Tech coil-over aluminium dampers and Eibach dual-rate springs. Customers can upgrade to adjustable Ohlins TTX dampers or a set of Bilstein 2-stage units.
The Ariel Nomad 2 is a unique piece of kit designed for a specific purpose. It’s a full-scale toy, and with a starting price of $86,995, it certainly doesn’t come cheap.
