Australian singer Amy Shark takes on Kylie!
Who is Amy Shark? An Australian singer who has released two albums so far, both of which have topped the chart there, a handful of EP’s and a number of singles, including two top ten hits. Amy has also achieved charting singles in America, mostly on the Adult Alternative Airplay and Heatseekers charts. She has worked with The Chainsmokers and Sam Fischer, and now she turns her attention to a fellow countrywoman’s biggest global smash!
The past twelve months have seen Amy release two awesome Pop singles, “Only Wanna Be With You” (an original song) and “Can I Shower At Yours?”, now she covers Kylie’s massive 2001 hit, “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head“, and she gives a wistful, alternative slant on the infectious mega hit, reminiscent of Madonna’s “Love Profusion”. The recording marks a break between her two most recent compositions as Amy puts the finishing touches to her next album, the follow up to 2021’s “Cry Forever”, which featured the Platinum certified singles “Everybody Rise” and “Love Songs Ain’t For Us”.
Amy launched her music career using the name ‘Amy Cushway’ in 2008, only swapping to ‘Amy Shark’ in 2013, when she signed to Sony Records Australia, and began recording her debut EP, “Nelson”. She followed this with “Night Thinker”, which went to No.1 in New Zealand and No.2 in her home country, and featured the top three hit, “Adore”. 2018 saw Amy launch her debut album, “Love Monster”, which followed a second top ten hit, “I Said Hi”, and with the sellout tours that have followed, Amy has really made a name for herself, culminating with a performance at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Amy has, to date, won eight ARIA Music Awards, including Best Female Artist and Album Of The Year. 2023 has seen her supporting Coldplay on the Australian leg of their world tour as well as being a judge on the 2023 season of Australian Idol. Her music so far has seen Amy take on an Indie-Pop sound, much like her American counterpart, Avril Lavigne, but with “Only Wanna Be With You” and “Can I Shower At Yours?”, her sound evolves into a more Pop-Soft Rock genre. Her cover of “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” takes Amy into Country territory, losing much of the passion of Kylie’s original and instead turning the song into a Nashville/Western outback style production with understated vocals.
To date, Amy has confined herself to only a handful of co-writers and producers, reunited with New Zealand-born songwriter and producer Dann Hume for “Can I Shower At Yours?”, having worked together on both her studio albums and her breakout EP. Amy’s other main collaborator is fellow Australian Mark Landon, who has produced sings for Zara Larsson, Demi Lovato and even Madonna! 2024 is already building up to be another exciting year for Amy Shark. Make sure you get to know her back catalogue first before she dishes up her next new material!
