Aberdeen vs Celtic postponed due to waterlogged pitch after ‘weeks of prolonged rain’ at Pittodrie | Football News

Celtic’s hopes of cutting the gap to Hearts at the top of the Scottish Premiership to three points have hit a snag after their trip to Aberdeen, due to be shown live on Sky Sports, was postponed less than four hours before kick-off.

Martin O’Neill’s side had been due to visit Pittodrie on Wednesday evening but a 4pm pitch inspection carried out by fourth official Greg Souter, following what the hosts called “prolonged rain over the last few weeks”, found the ground to be too waterlogged for the game to go ahead.

A statement from Aberdeen read: “Following an inspection by one of the match officials he has called the game off in the interests of player safety.”

A new date for the fixture is yet to be announced.

The year has got off to a wet start in Aberdeenshire, which recorded the wettest January since 2016 with 124mm of rainfall, more than double the monthly average.

Celtic had hoped to take advantage of leaders Hearts’ slip-up last night, after Derek McInnes’ side were beaten 1-0 by St Mirren.
