The next Lexus LFA won’t be an EV after all

According to reports, Lexus has no plans to make the next-gen LFA a pure EV. It will keep some form of combustion power in the equation.

The new Lexus LFA could use a conventional hybrid, a plug-in hybrid or a more sophisticated performance-focused electrified powertrain. Whatever the solution, retaining an engine should help preserve some of the mechanical character that made the original so special.

There are plenty of unanswered questions, too. Lexus has yet to reveal the powertrain layout, output figures or whether a naturally aspirated engine will be used. It is also being said that the new LFA could introduce Toyota’s solid-state battery technology, although that detail remains unconfirmed.

The original LFA set an almost impossible benchmark. Its Yamaha-developed 4.8-litre naturally aspirated V10 produced 552 hp and screamed to a 9,000-rpm redline. Its titanium exhaust system made the soundtrack just as memorable as the performance.
